Why are there two balance transfer “choices” through my credit card company?

Question by gamerdude200808: Why are there two balance transfer “choices” through my credit card company?
I need to do a balance transfer from one card to another to avoid massive interest on another card. I have these two choices on my Chase Visa card (no balance on it):

0.99% Fixed APR until the first day of your billing cycle that includes 7/1/10 (Respond by: 10/31/09)
5.99% Fixed APR until the first day of your billing cycle that includes 4/1/11 (Respond by: 10/31/09)

What idiot would choose 5.99% when there is a 0.99%?? That’s almost a year itself.

Best answer:

Answer by OldJimmy
You are only “locking in” the 0.99 rate until 7/1/10, at which point it can go up to standard rates (What are those these days, 8-20%? What will they be in 9 months?).

Paying the higher rate now guarantees that rate for 18 months, at which point it will adjust to the standard rate.

If you have a small balance to transfer and can pay it off (or most of it) before the higher rate kicks in, the 0.99 rate would make sense for you.

If you have a much larger balance that will take you longer to pay off, it would be better to lock in the 5.99 rate to give you a year and a half to get rid of it before the rate goes up again.

Free balance transfer credit cards are one of the most under utilized resources for financial management.
